Chapter 12

When I returned to the car, Jordan asked, “Find out anything new?”

I shook my head and reached for my latte. “Just more confusion.” As I explained the discrepancies in the stories I’d heard, he furrowed his brow.

“I wonder who’s lying?” he muttered, staring at the church.

Just as I was about to answer, a sheriff’s car pulled in. Jordan swore and sunk down into the seat.

Mallory Richards exited the vehicle and I debated whether to go speak with her or not. I disliked the short, muscular woman, but the more I stuck my nose where it didn’t belong, the more certain I became that Jordan hadn’t killed anyone. Yes, I still had some doubts, but they were slowly fading.

The sheriff walked into the church.

“What’s she doing here?” I asked.

“Just seeing who’s attending and who isn’t,” he replied. “Sometimes it’s good to take a look at who cared enough to come.”

“If I killed someone, I’d never go to their funeral,” I muttered.

“Well, then that may also make you look guilty,” Jordan said. “If you kill someone and go to mourn their passing, you either feel awful that you offed them, or you truly miss them.”

My thoughts returned to Billy. I had no doubt he loved Brittney. Had he killed her in a rage, and now was back because he felt remorse? He said he’d left because he wanted to get away. Maybe guilt had been the driving force?

I should’ve asked him if he knew how to braid hair. Something about the braids really bothered me, but I couldn’t place why.

But I did have one suspect I could ask who was practically sitting on the floor of my car hiding from the sheriff.

“Did you ever braid Mattie’s hair?”

The question caught him off guard and his head snapped up. “Why?” he asked.

“I was just curious. Do you know how to braid?”

He sighed. “Yes. I used to braid Mattie’s hair for her.”

I nodded, reminding myself that didn’t necessarily mean he killed Brittney. Or if he had, he’d been creative in the method. I had been hoping he’d never learned to braid and I could take that to the sheriff and tell her to shove it where the sun don’t shine.

As she strolled out of the church, she glanced around, her gaze landing in our direction.

“She sees us,” I said. Jordan cursed and tried to make himself smaller. “If I leave now, it will look bad.”

“Agreed. Especially if she finds out I’m hiding in here,” Jordan replied.

When she stepped off the curb and began walking our way, I jumped out of the car and slammed the door, hurrying to meet her as far away from Jordan as possible. Being caught at the woman’s funeral he was accused of killing wouldn’t be a good look for him.

“Sheriff!” I called forcing a wave and smile. I really disliked the woman. “Just the person I wanted to talk to!”

Good grief, my hips and back hurt from Zumba. I didn’t know how many more dance classes my body could take.
